Jonathan Tucker – Painted Forms

November 12, 2004- December 31, 2004

The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Jonathan Tucker. The Gallery is located at 3600 Market St, and is open Monday through Saturday, from 9AM to 5PM. There will be an opening reception for the artist of Friday, November 12, from 5:30-7:30.

Jonathan Tucker’s work inhabits the space between sculpture and painting. Using acrylic paint and modeling paste – a combination of acrylic polymer and marble dust – Tucker brushes, pours, and casts to form shapes that he assembles and then paints.

Exploring the dimensional qualities of paint for nearly a decade, Tucker found his palette to be a source of inspiration: textures, surfaces and color built up strange concoctions that are vaguely reminiscent of rocks and gardens.

Not long ago the artist stated that it is in his interest to explore the figurative and spatial qualities of paint itself: the idea of paint as paint (an exploration of the properties of paint) and the other extreme, narrative and representation.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Tucker received a MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1990. Recent exhibitions include Gregory Lind Gallery, Elizabeth Harris Gallery, Lombard Fried Gallery, and White Columns.
