Art & Community VI: The Color Project

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Art & Community VI: The Color Project is part of an interdisciplinary project surveying the artistic productions of those using color as a primary source for exploration. The series will focus on color as the umbrella under which contemporary artists, writers, filmmakers and performers reflect upon a wide range of topics.
The Esther Klein Art Gallery will feature the group exhibit: GREEN. the result of a national open call to artists to participate in an exhibition focusing on the color green. Selected artists representing Philadelphia and numerous other US cities explore many topics including such themes as nature and ecology, the symbolic quality of money, and the temporality of life. These artists include
The Color Project includes community events sponsored by numerous other University City arts and culture organizations including: International House (Film), University of PennsylvaniaMuseum of Archaeology & Anthropology (Culture and Artifacts), the Kelly Writers House (Poetry and Prose), and a collaberation between the Spiral Q Puppet Theater and the Community Education Center (Dance). Each participating organization will schedule events that address the concept of color in its many forms.
PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS
The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology will offer a self-guided tour, considering the color RED in several diverse cultures across continents and through time: Native Americans of the Southwest; ancient Romans and Estruscans; Chinese and Buddhist cultures of Asia. The RED self-guided tour may be picked up at the Tresher Main Entrance.

Primary Cinema – October 20-24
The enigma of color, the primordial phenomenon of light and darkness, that has attracted the interest and attention of many of the most gifted intellects of all time. In the cinema, bursts of light, darkness and color are accepted as life. The cinema implies a complete upheaval in optics and central to this revolution is the isolation of color within a fixed frame. The Community Education Center and the Spiral Q Puppet Theatre – November 1, 9 PM-midnight
MUSE ON BLUE: This election eve coffee house competition features performance and visual arts with the theme of “Blue”, from love to politics and anything in between. Join in as a contestant for prizes or just to muse on blue. The event takes place on Monday, November 1, 9 PM-midnight at the CEC located at 3500 Lancaster Avenue. Seven-Up on Gold: A Luminous Exploration of the Color Gold
The Kelly Writers House presents seven members of the Writers House and Penn community, including Al and Hannah Filreis, Jennifer Snead, and Talia Stinson, speaking, reading, telling stories, and singing for seven minutes each on the color gold –moderated by Writers House Program Coordinator Tom Devaney. The Urban Nutrition Initiative (UNI), a program with a ten-year track record of implementing innovative nutrition education in public schools, will organize a community tour of Public School organic gardens maintained by school students at part of the innovative UNI garden program.
